What is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a diagnostic and preventive procedure that allows doctors to examine the inside of the large intestine using a thin, flexible tube equipped with a camera. It plays a vital role in detecting:

  • Colorectal cancer
  • Polyps (which may be precancerous or cancerous)
  • Inflammation or ulcers
  • Diverticulosis or diverticulitis
  • Other digestive tract abnormalities

During the procedure, the doctor can take photos, remove polyps,
or collect tissue samples (biopsies) for further analysis. Conducted under conscious sedation, a colonoscopy typically takes about 30 minutes and is performed in a safe, private clinical environment.

What to Expect at Brunswick Endoscopy

At our clinic, your safety, comfort, and peace of mind are our top priorities. From preparation to recovery, our team is here to support you every step of the way.

Preparing for Your Procedure

You’ll be provided with specific bowel preparation instructions based on the solution prescribed (Bi-Peglyte, GOLYTELY/COLYTE, or PICO-SALAX). Proper preparation is essential for a successful and accurate procedure.

The Day of your Appointment

Upon arrival, a nurse will guide you through the admission process, review your medical history, confirm your preparation, and explain the procedure. IV access and baseline vital checks will be completed before sedation. Please arrange for someone to accompany you and drive you home afterward, as driving is not permitted for the rest of the day.

Recovery and Results

Following your colonoscopy, you’ll spend about 45 minutes in recovery under close monitoring. The doctor will review your results, and a nurse will provide follow-up instructions. Biopsy results, if taken, are typically available within 4–6 weeks.
